In 2000, Dr. Suzanne Montgomery, Director of the Center for Health Research at Loma Linda University, conducted a prostate cancer prevention research study with African American men in San Bernardino County.  In 2001, Dr. V. Diane Woods,  (a doctoral student at Loma Linda University), President & CEO of the African American Health Institute, joined Dr. Montgomery’s research team: since that time  Dr. Woods has continued conducting community research with men of African ancestry in Southern California and in the Nassau Bahamas.  As a result of Dr. Woods’ research the Black men have created a Toolkit to help other men to make a decision about prevention, early detection, and treatment of prostate cancer.

The Toolkit offers tools to help men:

  • Know if you have a problem
  • Know when and how often to be checked
  • Understand your test results
  • Develop skills for prostate health decision making
  • Become equipped to talk to your doctor
  • Identify what treatment option is best for you
  • Obtain tools to decrease your risk for getting prostate cancer
  • Gain skills in discussing prostate prevention and early detection with their physicians
